Today the Architecture of time is more relevant in our lives than the architecture of space. The laws of relativity hint at a connectedness of space, time and energy. As networking technologies engender a more connected way of life, our definition of humanity is changing from space centered institutions to time centered institutions, from material based economies to information based ones. What we know about the world far exceeds what we are capable of perceiving. Relativity begins to enter our sensory perception when we are connected to more than one ecology simultaneously. The project will spatialize the phenomenon of relativity in the context of an interconnected network of local ecology’s.

There is a deep connection between our growing concern for the environment and our changing perception of time and space. We don’t exist in isolation, our ‘identity’ comes from being compared to others and thus we are connected to others, in the same way life begins to hold a deeper meaning when we understand that there is but one pool of life that we are all a part of, Energy is neither created nor destroyed, it merely changes form.
Our perception of the world seems to be limited to our immediate surroundings, creating a illusion of uniqueness and a desire to be dominant. Through installation and immersive space I want to express an idea of continuum. Our definition of the world is rapidly broadening, aided by various technological innovations. At the same time our relationship with the earth is changing. For instance GPS and satellite technology has given us, in a very real sense a third eye in the sky, which we can use in many ways, now it is up to us to adapt and make that as much a part of our sensory perception as the images that we see with our eyes.
Illusion is created by an incomplete view of the world due to limitations of our senses. But technology is engendering a connectedness between us all so that all our illusions may begin to intersect one another and be viewed simultaneously. In a way we are able to see events from many different perspectives simultaneously. Local ecologies begin to interact with one another to form larger ecologies until there is a continuum.

The idea of movement and mutation in architecture is derived from the need to express the space time relationship. Where in the past architectures relationship with time was passive and the only requirement for a building was to last for ages, now it is understood that there is a deeper connection between space and time. Just as speed has entered the architects lexicon, relativity must come in and make its mark.
Noosphere
The noosphere is a theorized higher state of evolution where humans develop an even higher state of consciousness, theorists like Teilhard deChardin have talked about the role that technology and social networking plays in it. DeChardin further postulates that the whole world will become part of this interconnected society at a point in time called ‘omega point’ when all humans will be connected by digital flows of information, at this point material concerns become less relevant and an architecture that deals with the flows and expression of the new connected consciousness becomes much more relevant. As we move towards a more connected human consciousness will we ever understand our ecologies as part of the larger global ecology that includes all life forms, can we develop an inter connectivity between man and nature.

The pieces seemed to oscillate between exploring spatial conditions to visionary futuristic sounds. One peice, Nike by Pauline Oliveros stood out for me. It reminded me of the Buddhist chanting sounds that ive heard at monestaries and those sounds have always had an impact on me, sort of forced me to close my eyes and experience it. Paris is showcased as a technological wonderland littered with new innovative fun rides, and the protagonist Hulot wanders aimlessly disoriented by his environment. Another character Mr. Lacs in contrast seems absolutely at ease and a product of the world that surrounds him.

Larger themes that came out of the movie for me was the relevance of technology and the need to balance and streamline technology to a point where it stays relevant and comfortable to all those who engage with it so that everyone can participate and contribute to its propagation, the idea of better interfaces with which we can interact.

Another theme that the movie made me think about was the ideas and agents that define a society. Hulot was disoriented because he didn’t feel connected to his environment, his intuition mechanism was thrown off by al the technology that surrounded him.
